Upon receiving a project commission, WET's first design endeavor is to learn about the spirit and nature of the project, the surrounding community and cultural aspects, and physical characteristics, including scale, weather, immediate architectural and terrain conditions.

The design process begins with the development of a concept or series of one or more conceptual alternatives for each water feature. Developing design alternatives enables WET to explore a broad range of possibilities varying in form, scale and cost. WET prepares plans, elevations, sections, illustrations, written narratives and models to clarify design objectives. WET provides preliminary cost estimates associated with each design concept.

With the client’s approval of the design concept, WET examines more closely the form and expression of the water feature and its technology. WET often develops models to study form and sculpture, along with full-scale mock-ups to study texture, sound, light, reflectivity and scale.

WET’s research and development division constructs mock-ups for elements of the water feature to optimize their visual or performance characteristics.

WET's engineering group prepares all technical documentation for the project, including 30% and 100% drawing package releases. These engineering documents are issued to be bid and built by a contractor local to the site.

In many cases, a WET project will incorporate technological elements conceived and fabricated by WET Labs Inc. WET’s fabrication process ensures the precision and quality of those components.

On site field technicians oversee the Project's installation and make final adjustments to the equipment.

Many WET features exploit the inherent, kinetic quality of water through complex choreographies of water events. Animation programs are first created on VirtualWET, a 3-D particle model simulation tool. The programs are then fine tuned and completed by the project's designer on-site.

WET works with its clients to ensure the longevity of their water features. WET offers maintenance programs ranging from annual site visits for periodic “tune-ups” to the inclusion of a WET Care staff member permanently on-site to ensure the proper maintenance for larger water feature.
