University of Utah Alumni Honors University of Utah Alumni Association honored its own March 13 at the 152nd anniversary of the U.’s beginning, with more than 400 guests turning out for Founders Day at the Grand America Hotel. Talk about distinguished alumni. Dentist Timothy Evans (class of ‘74), established the Andean Children’s Foundation in Bolivia and helped to establish the Center for Humanitarian Outreach and Intercultural Exchange (CHOICE) in rural areas of Africa, Asia and South America. Mark Fuller (‘76), whose company, WET Design (Water Entertainment Technologies), is responsible for the fountains at the Bellagio Hotel-Casino, Las Vegas, and most recently designed the cauldron for the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. Richard Jacobsen ( ‘68) and Susan Jacobsen ( ‘66) are founders of the California Family Foundation and the Bennion Community Service Center on the U. campus. Shirley Russon Ririe (‘50), co-founder and artistic co-director of Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company, is a winner of the National Dance Association Presidents Award. Honorary Alumna Carol M. Fay (University of California, ‘58) was the first woman district manager of the Social Security Administration and the first woman district director of the Internal Revenue Service, and with husband Richard Fay, established the Richard A. and Carol M. Fay Presidential Endowed Fay Medical Information Center in the U. School of Medicine. Alumni president Randy Dryer was event emcee and U. President Bernie Machen welcomed guests. Incoming Alumni president Carol Bench and Clyde Bench were at the head table, along with awards committee chairman Jerry Jensen and Marjorie Ann Jensen, and Fred and Marti Esplin. Honoree Fuller’s wife Susan was there, as were his mother Faye Fuller and brother Todd Fuller with Carol Martin. Rhees Ririe and Joan Woodbury chatted with friends, along with Barbara and Jerry Stringfellow, Nanette Richard and Nancy Giles and Clark Giles, last year’s Honorary Alumnus. Fine Arts Dean Phyllis Haskell and husband Doug Tims congratulated award winners, as did David and Linda Buchman, Daryl and Steve Barrett, Ray and Judy Peterson, Lynette and J. Spencer Kinard, Judy and Richard Cannon, and Drew and Christine Peterson. Alice and Duane Schmidt mingled with guests, along with Mitzi and Rod Brady, Susan Lewon, Melissa Phillips, Lindsay Cutshall and Pat Richards and Bill Nichols. Shirley Ririe’s sister Diane Chatwin was there, as were Julia and Rob Russon, Cathy Leppert, Scott and Lisa Meitchen, Chris Machen, Pat and Steve Ott, Earl and Corinne Wunderli, Mary Lynne and Conrad Hansen, Judge Thomas and Kay Greene, Jack and Dixie Schoenhals, Sheena McFarland, Sue Parker and Gina Fisher, and all applauded Michelle Dayton, Ogden, a Ben Lomond High School senior who received the Alumni Association scholarship.
